Fan Age 03:38 video
I see a distance An empty horizon Climbing up the backs of every idol you reside in I promise gold in every short-winded letter Found a spot of sun where I can lie in wait forever I’ll spin a web for you The strongest me you never knew And when the ocean calls you back Goodbye would seem too soon And when you left I felt so stranded on this planet I drove a hundred miles to find the clues obtuse and slanted I’ve been abandoned Alone but I’m not lonely I’m the master of my present So I handle what it throws me I’ll spin a web for you The strongest me you never knew And when the ocean calls you back Goodbye would seem too soon You’re not missing much But who you taught to take the punch And I don’t feel bad, I hold no guilt I’ve got this to do When summer sets, I’m going too And the flowers wilt I’ll save myself Sometimes I dream and think about a brand new person One who wouldn’t waver past the closing of the curtain So was it worth it to leave this at the table I know I missed the race, I was the one who cut the cable, because You’re not missing much But who you taught to take the punch And I don’t feel bad, I hold no guilt Cos I’ve got things to do When summer sets, I’m going too The flowers wilt I’ll save myself I’ll spin a web for you And all the words you weave come true So when the ocean takes you back You couldn’t sink too soon

Bound to the future and tethered to a sinking garden The hand is turning and I’m coming up again A neon glow, an ominous welcome But saturated with your love I could be the spark to the engine Basked in my dumbness This apocalyptic justice Hand is turning and I’ve ruined it again Drifting skyward in the golden hour Hold my hand and take this power Guess it’s just the way it’s meant to end The atmosphere is thinning It’s clear we weren’t made for this I’m sorry, the world is ending again I’m sorry again

Perfect Dark 03:23
There is no softness about me But the snow finds its gentle rhythm til I’m buried And it keeps falling and pressing heavy There is a softness around me It is dark and sleeping It is rich midnight The fog is broken by blue lines Dashes of a highway Flashes of her White light blind Sixteen missing I’ve been a blur And we might Just catch up in passing How are you? I’m fine Thanks for asking There is no softness about me But the snow finds its gentle rhythm til I’m buried And it keeps falling and pressing heavy There is a softness around me It is dark and sleeping It is rich midnight The fog is broken by blue lines

The follow up to the hard-edged 2017 record End of Sam-Soon” Power Fantasy finds Smut in a state of transition, working within and throughout the boundaries of shoegaze, trip-hop, and noise-pop to arrive at something new. Melodic and moody, loud and quiet, Smut are intentional in yielding a droney and percussive pop. Bell Cenower’s biting bass lines creep below the surface as Andrew Min’s & Sam Ruschman’s distorted guitar melodies lift the band to explosive heights. Hovering over her bandmates’ wall of sound, Tay Roebuck’s caustically sung, meditations on grief, guilt, and growing into oneself make us nostalgic for shoegaze bands past.

Coming in at just short of 10 minutes, Smut packs infectious hooks, off-kilter noise, and graceful builds in this immersive EP. Opening track ‘Fan Age’ begins in a dreamscape of guitar chords as Roebuck sings of climbing the backs of giants. About a minute and a half in, Smut has their feet firmly planted as ‘Fan Age’ transforms into an infectious, self-assured anthem-- “I don’t feel bad, I hold no guilt.” The EP’s title track finds Roebuck assuming the role of the underdog, hyping herself up to save the world, only to realize that no one person can save everyone. The band’s trip-hop influences show their teeth in the slow building, strong closer, ‘Perfect Dark’, inspired by the N64 game of the same name. Power Fantasy demonstrates a new direction for the indie outfit, one characterized by continued self-reflection and sonic renewal.
